“And what did you do?”

“Nothing.  I stared at her as if under a spell, and you know I’m allergic to bees.”

“Fell in love, eh, Wilhelm?”

“Well, yes, I guess you could say so.  Her hair was wild, and she wore only an old, dirty dress, if you could still call it that.  It looked as if someone had dressed her in it a long time ago.  It was tight and shredded in some places, and she had scratches on her skin, but she was beautiful regardless.”

“Yes, of course.  She reminded me of a wild animal in its natural environment.  Completely at one with nature.”

“You always loved your animals.”

“But she wasn’t an animal.  She was still a girl.  Around sixteen, I’d guess.”

“And you at nineteen thought you’d found a real treasure.”

Wilhelm nodded.

“And?  What happened next?”

“She saw me and ran away immediately, just like a scared animal.”  The young man sighed.

“But you said that she wore a dress.  She must have had contact with people.”

He nodded again.  “Long ago.  She could also understand me.  At first not so well, but at some time or other, she had had a family who spoke German.”

“But she couldn’t answer you back.”

“Actually, yes, but never in long sentences.  And her voice sounded like a bird in spring, high in the air.”

The other laughed.  “Maybe she was an angel from Heaven.”

“Please be serious.  This is important!”

“Your eyes… They’re still feverish.  Let’s stop for today.”
