PROLOGUE

A national election was due in eighteen months, and the ruling party of the multi-racial society of Guyana was desperately seeking every means of maintaining its status quo for another four years.  One of the probable means under the party’s microscope was the mysterious realm of the Obeah Man.

This Obeah was an African thing, but it bore a stigma.  When the question of legalizing Obeah was put forward, many Afro-Guyanese themselves rejected the idea because of their religious beliefs.  Of course that didn’t mean they didn’t consult the Obeah Man secretly in dire circumstances.  It didn’t require an expert to point out that Obeah in its various identities, formed the core of African culture.  In other words, there was no African culture if there was no Obeah.  Unfortunately, Obeah was a science (others deemed it an art) that was shrouded in darkness.  So how could the politicians convince the people to blindly embrace it as intrinsic to their culture, if they themselves knew very little about it?

They needed information—a fact-finding research must be done on Obeah in Guyana.
